The Cover Lock is a key-lockable strap clip that secures your spa cover to the spa cabinet, preventing unauthorized use — especially by curious children who might otherwise climb into an unsupervised spa. It's also the standard mechanism for meeting the cover-locking requirement in many municipal pool/spa safety bylaws across Ontario.
Why this is more than a convenience item: Most insurance policies and most municipal bylaws treat a hot tub or spa as an attractive nuisance — something that, if accessible to a child, could lead to drowning. The standard mitigation is a locked cover, and the Cover Lock is what does the locking. Beyond the legal and insurance angle, a locked cover also keeps unwanted guests out, prevents tampering with chemistry from neighbourhood pranks, and discourages anyone from leaving the cover half-on in a way that lets heat out and water evaporate.
How it works: The lock body bolts to the spa cabinet through a pre-drilled hole in the cover skirt. The strap (already integrated into your spa cover's edge) clips into the lock and only releases when the included key is turned. Most spa covers from the past 15 years are pre-prepped for cover lock installation; older covers may need a small modification.
Quick tips:
- Most spas need 2-4 cover locks (one per strap) for the cover to fully secure — check how many strap clips your cover has before ordering
- Keep a spare key in a separate safe location — spa cover keys have a way of disappearing into the seat cushions of poolside furniture
- If you're not sure your cover is pre-prepped for the lock or how many you need, bring a photo of the cover edge to one of our three Ontario showrooms
