The Siemens 60-Amp GFCI Breaker (Purple) is a 60-amp ground-fault circuit interrupter for larger spa installations — typically swim spas, swim/spa combinations, or higher-amperage Arctic Spas configurations that draw more current than a standard 50-amp residential hot tub. The dedicated GFCI protects against electrical shock by tripping the moment current leaks to ground from anywhere inside the spa.
When you need 60-amp instead of 50-amp: Check your spa's electrical specs (printed on the equipment-bay nameplate or in the installation manual). Spas with two large pumps, an electric heater plus a separate booster, or swim spa propulsion systems typically pull enough current to require the 60-amp GFCI. Standard residential hot tubs (one or two pumps, single heater) usually run on the 50-Amp GFCI instead. Don't oversize the GFCI — a 60A breaker on a 50A spa won't trip on overcurrent at the right point and defeats part of the protection.
What a GFCI does and why it's non-optional: A standard breaker only trips on overcurrent. A GFCI also trips the moment current leaks to ground via any path other than the intended return wire (such as through a person's body to ground via the wet spa floor). Without a working GFCI, an electrical fault inside the spa could electrocute anyone in the water. With one, the breaker trips in milliseconds. GFCI protection on hot tub installations is required by Ontario electrical code.
Important: GFCI breaker installation is electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician. Don't attempt this yourself.
Quick tips:
- Press the TEST button on the GFCI monthly — if it doesn't trip, the GFCI has failed and needs immediate replacement
- If your existing GFCI trips repeatedly with no fault you can find, the breaker itself may be aging out — GFCI breakers have a finite life and replacement is cheaper than continued service calls
