PVC Primer (1/4 pint, clear) is the prep solvent that goes on PVC pipe and fittings before applying cement. It cleans the surface, removes oxidation, and softens the outer layer of PVC so the follow-up cement creates a chemical weld rather than just a glue bond. Required for any spa plumbing repair where joint reliability matters — which is to say, all of them.

Why primer is non-optional for spa plumbing: A PVC joint glued without primer can hold air pressure but will eventually leak under continuous water pressure at spa temperatures. The primer step takes 10 seconds per joint, costs almost nothing, and is the difference between a repair that holds for the life of the spa and one that fails in 6 months. Don't skip it because the joint "looks clean" — oxidation is invisible.

How to use it: Apply primer with the dauber to both the inside of the fitting and the outside of the pipe. The PVC will look slightly darker and feel slightly tacky. While the primer is still wet (don't let it dry), apply Weld-On 747 PVC Cement the same way to both surfaces, push together with a quarter-turn, hold for 30 seconds, and let cure 30 minutes before pressure.

Quick tips:

  • Work in a well-ventilated equipment bay — primer fumes are harsh
  • Buy primer and cement together; one without the other doesn't make a reliable spa repair
